First United utilizes three hymnal resources: The Presbyterian Hymnal, Sing the Faith, and Hymns, Songs, and Worship Music. Each resource offers distinctive qualities that provide our services with a rich variety of hymns and materials from which to draw.

The Presbyterian Hymnal, published in 1990 by Westminster/John Knox Press, is the primary hymnal serving the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). This hymnal includes the core hymns, spiritual songs, and service music of the Presbyterian faith. It also contains a large number of psalm settings, also elemental to the Reformed tradition. Finally, this hymnal contains a wide variety of “contemporary” and “ethnically diverse” hymns that enrich the singing life of our congregation. You will find The Presbyterian Hymnal as a blue, hardcover book in the hymnal racks on the pews. |

Sing the Faith, published in 2003 by Geneva Press, is a supplement to The Presbyterian Hymnal, and “presents some of the best offerings in new congregational music from around the world, as well as old favorites and historic classics that the latest denominational hymnal does not contain” (Introduction). You will find Sing the Faith as a blue, soft cover book in the hymnal racks on the pews. |

Hymns, Songs, and Worship Music was created by members of First United a few years ago in response to the need for a volume containing a variety of hymns and songs not found in The Presbyterian Hymnal or Sing the Faith. You will find Hymns, Songs, and Worship Music as a plastic-bound set of music with a clear plastic cover and blue backing.
